The Hermit's Lost Coins Rules Page

Background Story Behind The Game    Play The Game

Playing the Game (Actually 3 games in 1)

What You Need to Play
1) A GPS Receiver and access to the Internet.
2) A desire to chase gold coins in the oldest 48 caches in the state of Utah.
3) Be registered on the cachunuts web site. This is free and easy.
4) Send a photo of you or your caching group to the Cach-U-Nuts if they don't already have it.
5) Good knowledge of the game rules to avoid the Curse Of The Hermit!
6) Check the 48 square playing board to see the 48 designated caches.
7) Correctly place a different coin in at least 16 of the 48 caches to complete your treasure map.

Placing The Coins
Three things happen when you log a coin.

1) The coins are played very similar to cachunuts with 10 points for each correctly placed coin. Each player's score will be listed on a leader board just like in the nut game.

2) You will receive a piece of a treasure map with each correctly placed coin. There are a total of 16 pieces needed to complete the treasure map. This treasure map leads to the location where 4 "Conquistador Coins" are hidden. (If the legends are true!) Each player's map is only visible to that player and only when that player is logged in. No one else can see your map. You can begin your search for the highly prized lost "Conquistador Coins" anytime you feel you have enough of the map to figure out the location. This map is the original map drawn by the ill fated bank robber so don't expect coordinates for your gps. You'll need to do some research and brush up on your history to figure this one out! If you manage to find the hidden "Conquistador Coins" be sure to only take one coin. Logging more than one of these special coins will result in the Hermit's Ultimate Curse!

3) If you're the very first person to log a coin into one of the 48 designated caches then you will own that square. Your photo will then appear in that square marking it as claimed. The object of the "Four Score" side game is to get 4 squares in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Claiming 4 squares will require a lot of strategy, observing the rules, and if you own a gas guzzler car you may need a second job! :o)

The Designated Caches
A 48 square playing board has been created with one square for each of the 48 oldest caches in the state of Utah. The board is 6 squares across and 8 squares down. The first player to place a coin in one of these 48 caches will own that square. Their photo will then appear in that square marking it as claimed. The object of this side game is to get 4 squares in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Be careful to avoid the Hermit's Curse because besides losing points and a map piece you will also lose one of your squares. This will give another player a chance to claim your lost square.

Avoiding the Hermit's Curse.
Here are the rules you must follow in the placement of the coins. Read this carefully or you'll find out real quick about the Hermit's Curse!!

1) If you play the same number coin twice you will be hit with the Hermit's Curse! You'll lose 10 points from your score, a piece of your treasure map will disappear and you'll lose one of your claimed "Four Score" squares (if you have one), giving another player a chance to claim your lost square.

2) If you place a coin in a cache and that particular coin has already been placed in that cache then you will be hit with the Hermit's Curse! You'll lose 10 points from your score, a piece of your treasure map will disappear and you'll lose one of your claimed "Four Score" squares (if you have one), giving another player a chance to claim your lost square.

3) If you place a second coin in a cache where you have previously placed a coin you will be hit with the Hermit's Curse! You'll lose 10 points from your score, a piece of your treasure map will disappear and you'll lose one of your claimed "Four Score" squares (if you have one), giving another player a chance to claim your lost square.

4) If you place a coin in a cache that is not one of the 48 designated caches you will score no points and will not get a piece of the treasure map. No curse from the Hermit in this case, but you may be cursed by the other players.

5) PLEASE remember to LOG the coin's movements! Log them IN and OUT of caches as quickly as possible. Log them on the Geocaching website as well as the cachunut website! The 48 designated caches are spread out across Utah, and nobody likes a wild goose chase, or in this case a wild coin chase. It's impossible for us to control this part of the game but the Hermit is watching, and he may curse those who cause trouble, so BEWARE!!

An Example of Game Play
Suppose that KimBest places coin 238 in Pink Floyd cache. He will get 10 points plus a piece of the treasure map. He will also own the square for the Pink Floyd cache for being the first player to place a coin in that cache. Then suppose that DHobby1 comes by and placed coin 242 in the Pink Floyd Cache. He will get 10 points and a piece of the treasure map but KimBest will still own the square for the Pink Floyd cache because he was the first one to place a coin there. Now suppose that BeerSwiller picks up coin 238 somewhere else and places it in the Pink Floyd Cache. He will be hit with the Hermit's Curse because coin 238 has already been placed in the Pink Floyd Cache! He will lose 10 points and a piece of his treasure map. He will also lose one of his squares if he has one. You will need to do a little research before placing any coins! (So Don't be like the BeerSwiller!)

You will need to use strategy in this game to see which caches will give you the opportunity to get 4 squares in a row. You will also need to watch other players and try to block them if they are close to getting their 4 squares. Again there is no real prize for getting 4 in a row but maybe we will put out a special cache and only people who have scored four will get the coordinates to it.

The Special Powers of the Conquistador Coins
1) The player that finds a Conquistador Coin in it's original hiding spot will be allowed to keep the coin as a reward. As an added reward that player will have the option of choosing any square on the board and capturing it away from another player so choose the square (cache) carefully to take advantage of this special power. Log the coin into that cache like normal but keep the coin with the Hermit's blessing. The player will also receive a 100 point bonus and instructions on claiming an additional prize!

2)Along with the special power of the "Conquistador Coins" their is a special curse called "The Hermit's Ultimate Curse". If any player logs a pickup for a second "Conquistador Coin" they will lose all their points and all of their squares. They will be starting over from scratch. Be very careful playing the Conquistador Coins.
